How to Change the World in 3 Steps
Tarah Avery
Have you ever bought yourself a pair of TOMS shoes?
They are amazing. At first, they fit tight and I get those little blisters on my heels (even with socks). But then over time, they begin to stretch a little and make a mold of my foot! It is the perfect fit.
Sometimes I compare myself to others. Maybe you do that, too? I have noticed that when this happens, I become discontent in who God made me to be and the beautiful accomplishments he has in store for my life.
Sometimes I see someone who is doing big things and I get jealous of them or admire them. I soon want to be like them or do what they’re doing, so I try to fit into their role. Can you relate?
We try to put on their TOMS, and they just don’t fit. They’re too big or too tight or just feel plain wrong (like in the story of Cinderella, when every maiden in the kingdom tries on the glass slipper). The same happens when we try to be someone we’re not.
You cannot create a passion inside of you that is just not there. I forget that all I have to do is remember what my passion is, and that will lead me to a purpose that is ever unfolding.
Ladies, you were all meant for something uniquely you. You cannot fit into other people’s molds. It will never feel quite right no matter how hard you try. I could be writing a food blog, but it wouldn’t be me. Surprisingly, it could be a successful blog, even a blog people read. But over time I would grow weary of it, and my joy would be lost.
Why? Because food is not my passion (other than eating it). And passion is the key to purpose, and purpose to potential. I have read MANY food blogs, and they are great! You can really tell when someone is passionate about food in the way they write. They have used their passion and created a purpose out of it. And with that, there is unlimited potential because they are right in the center of God’s will.
And that is the best place to be.
So how can you make a difference in the world? In 3 steps, I’ll show you how!
Discover your passions.
What do you love to do? What motivates you? What gets you excited?
When I first started thinking about my passions, it was hard to figure out what they were. I had hobbies but I didn’t know if I could call those passions. I loved mentoring, and I cared a lot about healthy relationships. I had a blog, but that was just for fun, I had no idea how to narrow these down! Answering some of the questions above helped me figure it out a little better.
Use your passions to discover a purpose.
If you could do something full time, what would it be? What type of work would get you up in the morning?
I had no idea! I never knew I could even blog as a career! So that was clearly not an option. That is until I found out that if done the right way and by learning from the right people, I could actually make a living blogging! I finally knew what I was supposed to do – combine my passion for writing with my passion for mentoring and voila!
It was the most amazing feeling once I discovered what it was that I was going to pursue for the rest of my life, and you know what? I love waking up in the morning! I sometimes cannot wait until the weekends are over so I can get back to work!
That is a foreign feeling to many people, but it can happen to you if you decide to seriously pursue your passions and make a new career choice. It doesn’t have to be your own business; that is just one option.
Be open to your unlimited potential.
This is where you get to dream big! Where could you see your career going in 10-20 years? What do you want to accomplish and create?
Since starting the journey of beginning my own business I have never ever had more dreams for my career. Things that I have never even thought of doing before are coming out of the woodwork of my mind and imagination. When we choose to pursue our passions we have limitless potential and who knows where they will take you.
God created each of us uniquely. We are all made with different talents, skills, desires, and passions. He put them there for a reason and when we pursue them we are bringing a little piece of heaven to earth.
I believe that one day, on the new earth we will have jobs. Adam and Eve did and they lived in a perfect world. I also believe that our jobs will be exactly what we love to do, and in doing so we will bring glory to God. And the cool thing is, we can start right now!
To sum the whole thing up, the best thing you can do for the world is be you – uniquely, unashamedly, beautiful you.
So take a look at those steps, take some time to think on them, embrace who you are, and you will change the world.
If you know, or if you’ve thought about it, I would love to hear what your passion is in a sentence.
